Today’s Daily Calm meditation was about a Cherokee parable that goes like this:

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life.

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

“One is evil — he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.

“The other is good — he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

“This same fight is going on inside you — and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Chief replied, “The one you feed.”

Both these wolves dwell in each of us. I certainly know my evil wolf, and while I’m not proud of it, I accept that it is a part of me.

As I go through life, however (and especially when interacting with challenging people), I try to stay mindful of the importance of feeding my good wolf, rather than the evil one. That’s not always easy; the evil one clamors hungrily for nourishment and often distracts me from the gentle wolf patiently waiting for their share.

Tempting though it is to feed the evil wolf, this only brings suffering to others and to our selves. We always have a choice.

This post is dedicated to my favorite Wolf — my father (named Wolf), whose good wolf always carries the day. Thank you, Papa, for the love you have given me and so many others.
