Having spent this past week on vacation I was reminded of the incredibly freeing sensation of timelessness. Because I am self-employed my days are usually rigidly scheduled and frequently overscheduled. Not having any plan or pressures for a week felt glorious. As I get ready to return to work I am trying to figure out how to balance my need for unstructured space with my need to be organized and professional. A juggling act to which there is no easy answer. #vacation #space #worklifebalance #timelessness

Living mindfully means getting out of my head (thinking, planning, past and future) and into my body (sensing what is in the present). I can use my five senses to stay grounded in my body.

My intention for today is to really listen to the sounds around me. Right now, I'm hearing the subtle whisper of the wind in the tree outside the window, the tinkle of a wind chime, the distant rumble of traffic, the hum of the refrigerator and the creaking of floorboards. All is well in this moment. #mindfulness #listen #senses #grounding

Today's Daily Calm talked about how we sometimes fuel conflict with angry thoughts, words and actions.. For many years I was in a romantic relationship where the smallest incident could escalate into explosive conflict. In the heat of the moment we would cut each other off and take turns adding layer upon layer of anger, hurt and blame. This destructive spiral seemed inescapable and usually only ended when both of us were hoarse and depleted, or with one of us fleeing the premises (often me).

Now I I'm in a relationship with a very different dynamic. Whenever there is discord or unhappiness, which is normal in any relationship, we quickly notice how we're feeling and tell the other, calmly and non-accusingly. Then we patiently talk the issue through, each letting the other finish their sentences. There is no need to blame or shame the other or to defend ourselves; Rather, there is a shared desire to find a mutually agreeable solution to our problem. because we both know that our relationship can only thrive when both of us feel heard and honored. Today I give thanks for my partner, who gives me the space to be me, and for my psychotherapist, who has helped me reclaim myself. The grind never stops, but it gets easier with time. 🙂
